Washington University School of Medicine Receives Fetal Bovine Serum Donation from Peak Serum, Inc.

Peak Serum, Inc. is proud to announce its 2018 Cares for Cures Grant recipient, Russell Pachynski of the Washington University School of Medicine.

The Cares for Cures Grant was born from Peak Serum’s mission to support research to cure diseases through the donation of Fetal Bovine Serum. Research labs and organizations are encouraged to apply for donations of Fetal Bovine Serum through the Peak Serum website and grants are given each fiscal year.

Pachynski, Assistant Professor at Washington University School of Medicine, is the second recipient of the Cares for Cures Grant. His team focuses broadly on the leukocyte migration (or trafficking) in the setting of tumor immunology. “My lab is thrilled to continue our research with the help of Peak Serum’s Cares for Cures Grant,” said Pachynski. “We are so thankful for the support of our research efforts to make breakthroughs each and every day.”

Peak Serum Sponsors Strides for Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease For The Second Year

The last two years Peak Serum has supported the fight against Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease by sponsoring the CJD Foundation’s annual Strides for CJD fundraiser. The event’s 1-mile walkathon was held at Rolland Moore Park, Shelter #2 in Fort Collins on October 14, 2017 offering participants a t-shirt and family-friendly educational activities.

“Peak Serum has proudly supported the CJD Foundation at their annual Strides for CJD Foundation for the second year in a row,” said Tom Kutrubes, President and Founder of Peak Serum. “We hope our support helps find a cure and better the lives of people battling this disease.”

Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease is a rare, rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease. There is no treatment or cure, and the disease is invariable fatal. The proceeds from the event go directly to the CJD Foundation General Fund, which supports advocacy, medical education, family support and research programs.

“In 2016, Strides for CJD helped over 1,200 community members and family members impacted by the disease,” said Kutrubes. “We hope to touch more each year through Strides for CJD.”

About CJD and Prion Diseases: Prion diseases are a group of rare, invariably fatal brain disorders.  The best known of the prion diseases is Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD).  CJD can impair memory, coordination, and vision, and causes mental and physical deterioration. There are no treatments and no cures.  Two other prion diseases are called FFI (Fatal Familial Insomnia) and GSS (Gerstmann-Straussler-Scheinker Disease).  Those are typically hereditary and have a slightly different progression.

About the CJD Foundation: The CJD Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, offers families affected by prion disease with a 7-day HelpLine, referrals, an annual conference and support groups. For more information call 800.659.1991 or email

  • 100 Miles (1-day ride) – $1,500
  • 180 Miles (2-day ride) – $2,000

Peak Serum donated specifically to the Ridin’ Receptors Peloton that sponsored Kelly LaPara, lifelong cancer researcher hunting for a cure. We were able to ride and support in spirit as the team cycled through Minnesota in the three-day race.  We are so honored to support this team and their dedication to cancer research!
